10 Driving Tips: How to Navigate in a Storm

The United Kingdom often experiences unpredictable weather conditions. This week, the Met Office has issued two amber wind warnings for parts of the UK and broader yellow warnings for the rest of the UK following Storm Debi’s arrival. For those that must drive during a storm, this can be a daunting experience if you are unprepared. Adverse weather conditions, such as heavy rain, strong winds and even snow can significantly impact road safety.

The following is a list of precautions drivers can take to ensure you navigate the roads safely during a storm.

1. Stay Informed

Before embarking on a journey, check weather forecasts and road conditions in your area. Keep an eye on updates from reliable sources, as this information can help you to plan your route and decide whether it is safe to travel. In the UK, the Met Office provides up to date weather forecasts.

2. Plan ahead

If possible, postpone your journey until the storm has passed. If your travel is essential, plan your route carefully and consider safer roads that are less exposed to severe weather conditions. You should also allow for extra time to reach your destination, as driving in adverse weather conditions often requires reduced speeds.

3. Be reactive

Storms may bring about unexpected road conditions, such as blockages in the road and flooding. If the road is flooded, you should find another route. The number one cause of death during flooding is driving through the flood water. Flood water also may contain hidden hazards which can damage your car.

4. Ensure vehicle readiness

Before you set out, conduct a thorough check of your vehicle. Ensure that your brakes, tyres, lights and window wipers are in good working condition. Routine checks and maintenance on your vehicle are important to ensure vehicle readiness in any conditions.

5. Reduce your speed

One of the most important safety measures during a storm is to reduce your speed. Wet or icy roads can significantly increase stopping distances, so you should drive at a speed that allows for safe braking. Adhering to speed limits is crucial, and in adverse conditions, driving below the speed limit may be advisable.

6. Increase following distance

You should keep a greater distance between you and the vehicle in front of you during adverse weather conditions. This allows you additional time to react to sudden stops or changes in traffic conditions. In wet or icy weather, roads can become slippery, making it more challenging to stop quickly.

7. Use headlights wisely

Visibility can be compromised during storms, so use your dipped headlights to ensure others can see you and that you can see the road ahead. In the UK, it is a legal requirement to use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced. However, avoid using high beams in heavy rain or fog, as this can reflect the light back and further reduce visibility.

8. Be aware of aquaplaning

Aquaplaning occurs when a layer of water builds up between the road surface and your tyres, causing a loss of traction. If you experience aquaplaning, you should remain calm, ease off the accelerator, and steer gently in the direction that you want to go. Avoid sudden movements as these can lead to a loss of control of your vehicle.

9. Watch out for wind gusts

Strong winds are common during storms and can affect the stability of your vehicle. Keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and be prepared for gusts. You should also adjust your speed accordingly and be aware of any gaps between trees or buildings that won’t block the high winds.

10. Be extra cautious

Driving during a storm requires extra planning and caution. You should remain vigilant and keep a close eye on other road users who may be affected by the conditions.

Severe weather can present different challenges for those navigating through difficult conditions. These driving tips can help you to navigate during a storm safely, to keep yourself and other road users safe.
