How can artificial intelligence solve one of motoring’s fundamental issues?
Every year, there are 50000 road closures. As well as affecting regular commuters, traffic jams have a massively detrimental effect on the continuity of service for businesses around the UK.
Following a review of legislation around Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO’s) which are the orders behind restrictions on the road network which allow for temporary roadworks or permanent changes to the road.
How will it work?
The information would be used to enhance navigation systems and give drivers and fleet managers guidance about future roadworks and road closures. This means as well as having your SatNav suggest fastest routes, routes without tolls, you be will offered routes that avoid congested routes caused by roadworks. Having this information, months in advance will save fleets time and money and be beneficial to the environment.

Minister for the Future of Transport George Freeman said:
“As a road user, there is nothing more frustrating than discovering roadworks and getting stuck in traffic jams. Today’s announcement will help open up data, reducing congestion, pollution and frustration for road users”.
The Future
Last year drivers in the UK lost an average of 178 hours a year due to congestion. This costs motorists a total of £7.9 billion in 2018, which is an average of £1,317 per driver.
The department also confirmed that the data will provide the framework for the introduction of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV) such as driverless cars.
The integration of artificial intelligence into everyday motoring is fundamental to the governments ‘Future of Mobility’ strategy.
