£5,000 For new HGV Drivers
The lack of drivers has been a challenge for the HGV industry, as demand for transportation services increases.
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) saying there is currently a shortage of 100,000 drivers in the UK.
Currently, only 2% of qualified drivers are under the age of 25. This is mainly down to an average cost of £5,000 to train as a new truck driver. Another factor is high insurance rates for younger drivers.
Signing Bonus
New drivers joining Gist are being offered a bonus payment of up to £5,000 for HGV drivers joining their business. This is to keep the company delivering chilled food across the nation.
The bonus is worth up to £5,000 and is split between a £2,000 sign-on bonus and up to three more retention payments for continued service with the company. Gist currently employs more than 2,000 drivers, which are all trained at their bespoke training centre which opened in October 2019.
TrackDays.com is hoping that their ‘experience days’ for children as young as 10 will help push more of the next generation into the driver’s seat. The experience offers a taste of driving an HGV by getting youngsters in the cab and learning some basic driving skills around a specially designed course.
Comment
Dan Jones, operations manager at TrackDays.co.uk, said:
“The UK faces a very real problem with the current shortage of truck drivers.
“Long term planning offers one solution, encouraging youngsters to experience driving an HGV at a very early age so they can see if it’s something that interests them is one of the potentially effective ways to help address the issue.”
Supermarkets are warning that we could be faced with a ‘summer of food shortages’. Driver shortages cause 48 tonnes of fresh food waste every week. Many HGV fleets are trying to become more efficient by cutting regular costs like fuel, to raise the average wage for drivers in an effort to bring more to the industry.
