Highway Code Changes 2021

The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced a new rule change to the highway code that will give pedestrians and cyclists the right of way.

Current Code

Under the current rules, drivers must give way when someone steps onto a crossing on into the road. Meanwhile, pedestrians are told they shouldn’t start to cross until vehicles on the road have come to a full stop.

The amendments to the Code will afects cyclists at junction. It gives cyclists priority at junctions when traveling straight ahead, as well as advice on safe passing distances and speeds.

The changes are meant to encourage high-risk modes of transport (cars and large vehicles) to reduce the danger they pose.

The change also aims to maintain the increase in active travel during the pandemic, and get more people cycling and walking as their daily form of transport. This comes as part of the government’s new £338 million funds to boost cycling and walking.

Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps said:

“Millions of us have found over the past year how cycling and walking are great ways to stay fit, ease congestion on the roads, and do your bit for the environment. As we build back greener from the pandemic, we’re determined to keep that trend going by making active travel easier and safer for everyone.”

The investment from the government will also be used for infrastructure upgrades. This includes adding hundreds of miles of high-quality cycle lanes throughout the country, as well as walking schemes.

RAC head of roads policy, Nicholas Lyes said:

“These proposals should make cycling and walking safer, and this is to be welcomed. The aims should be to ensure that everyone using the roads understands the new rules because any confusion is likely to lead to avoidable collisions.”

The Highway code change will affect England, Scotland, and Wales and are due to be brought in this Autumn.
