Commuters Reliant on Cars

Commuters Reliant on Cars

New research from the RAC reveals that commuters are reliant on their own transport more than ever.

61% of commuters say they use their car for every trip.

On average commuters expect to be heading into the office 3 days a week.

1 in 5 (19%) said they plan to give up the commute altogether, working at home permanently. This is up by 12% pre-pandemic.

82% of drivers say they would struggle without a car. This is up from 79% last year. But this percentage fluctuates slightly depending on the area. 87% of drivers in rural areas said they would struggle compared to 77% of those living in cities and more urban areas.

46% of drivers say they would use their car less if public transport systems improved. But 45% said they are reluctant to use public transport as a direct result of the pandemic.

Why Cars?

When asked why they travel by car, 71% of commuters said because it is quicker.

55% said there is no feasible public transport alternative for their commute.

Comment

RAC data insight spokesman Rod Dennis said:

“These figures paint a picture of how car use is likely to change as a direct result of the pandemic, with a reduction in the number of days a week drivers commute by car being one of the most striking findings. It’s also clear just how important the car is to so many people, a relationship that appears to have strengthened due to Covid-19. Just a fifth of drivers see public transport as an attractive alternative to driving and less than half say they would use their cars less even if public improved.”
