Drivers Vote for Smart Safety Cameras
New research has shown that most drivers think speed cameras should track vehicle data.
New technology will allow safety cameras to track a vehicle’s tax, insurance, and MOT status.
The Safety Culture Report
The research is part of IAM RoadSmart’s annual Safety Culture Report.
This report studies drivers’ attitudes to key road safety issues throughout the year.
The survey from IAM RoadSmart asked 2000 drivers how they felt about authorities using this tech to track uncompliant drivers.
According to data 9 in 10 (89%), drivers said they supported the idea of safety tracking cameras.
These cameras would allow police to spot vehicles that are on the road illegally.
Data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) suggest there may be up to 600,000 vehicles on the road without a valid MOT.
The study from IAM RoadSmart also found that drivers would support instant penalties for those caught breaking the rules.
Anyone caught on camera driving dangerously could receive an automatic fine.
82% of drivers agreed that those caught driving 10mph over the limit by cameras in urban zones should receive fines.
78% said this should be the case in residential areas, and 64% said this should also come into effect on motorways.
A survey by the RAC last year found more than half (56%) of drivers admit to breaking the speed limit on motorways. 34% of these drivers admitted to going over 80mph.
Comment
Neil Greig, Director of Policy and Research at IAM RoadSmart said:
“Speeding is simply unacceptable, and it’s encouraging to see that the public are largely in support of looking for new ways to identify motorists who are endangering the lives of others. Introducing automatic detection will deter drivers who are tempted to speed, which in turn will help reduce the number of casualties on our roads.”
