Driving in the Snow
As we make our way into winter, colder weather brings a festive feel to the season. With temperatures in the UK set to drop, it looks like snow is on the way. But snow and ice can also be a hazard to those on the road. Ice can make the roads slippery and snow can cloud your vision compromising your road safety. This makes preparation even more important before setting out on any journeys. So we’ve put together a list of top tips to keep you going in the wintery weather.
Clear Your View
Making sure you can see clearly is fundamental before setting off. Rule 229 of the Highway Code says ‘you MUST be able to see clearly’. Taking extra time to clear the ice and snow for your windows and mirrors is important. Clearing the snow from your roof and lights will make you more visible to other road users.
De-Ice
De-ice is a must-have in the boot of any vehicle. But if temperatures drop significantly you might need it for more than just your windscreen. Spraying a bit of de-icing on your key can help if your locks freeze.
Tyres
Checking tyre tread is something drivers should do regularly regardless of the weather. But with potentially icy roads, having a good grip is even more important. The legal limit for tire tread is 1.6mm. You can check this easily by slotting a 20p coin into the central tire ridge. If the outer band of the coin is visible then your tires are below the legal limit.
Wipers and Screenwash
Checking your wipers and screen wash before you set off is an easy way to improve your safety on the road in cold weather. Keeping your wipers are in good working order will help clear your windscreen in a sudden downpour. Good quality screenwash will also help stop any water from freezing.
Be Prepared
Being prepared for any worst-case scenario is always the best practice when it comes to road safety. Keeping a survival kit in the boot of your car will help you if you break down. A torch, a blanket, a first aid kit, and an ice scraper are all essentials. Also, consider packing a hi-vis and warning triangle so you and your vehicle are visible. It’s also important to keep your phone charged so you can call for help in the event of an emergency.
