Government Announces Infrastructure Revolution

£25bn is being invested in road upgrades to improve infrastructure and boost economy

At the Conservative Party conference, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sajid Javid, outlined details of plans to improve infrastructure throughout the country.

The improvements involve upgrades to 14 major roads in England.

The upgrades include:

  • Completing the dualling of the A66 Trans-Pennine Expressway
  • The A46 Newark bypass
  • The Simister Island interchange where the M60 meets the M62 and M66 in Manchester
  • Construction work will begin on the A428 to improve journeys between Cambridge and Milton Keynes
  • Widening the A12 in east England

In his speech at the party conference, Mr Javid detailed the full benefits of the infrastructure investment “may not be felt for some time”, but that “the work must start here and now”.

He also said that investment in our infrastructure “will be key to making the next decade one of renewal”.

Mr Javid is hoping to win a reputation as the “Infrastructure Chancellor,” with the announcements in his speech.

At least £5 billion will be set aside to maintain and renew other strategic roads between 2020 and 2025.

Mr Javid redoubled his pledge made earlier in September to invest £220 million into improved bus services in England.

£50 million of which is set aside for the country’s first all-electric bus town or city.
