How to Drive Safely in Floods – Infographic

If you absolutely have to drive somewhere, here are 10 tips to keep you safe and get you to where you need to be.

1. Only travel if necessary

Weigh up whether you definitely need to travel or not? The safest approach to driving in floods is to not do it at all. If you are able to, walk to the shops or work from home

2. Check the route ahead

Use the internet and local news to identify any potential hazards. If roads are closed, plan an alternative route.

3. Prepare an emergency kit

It sounds like overkill but it’s worth having a high-visibility jacket, a breakdown warning triangle, torch, snacks, drinks, warm clothing, and jump leads.

4. Emergency phone number

Have your breakdown providers number on speed dial.

5. Vehicle checks

Make sure your headlights and brake lights are working, and check your tyre tread depth is within the legal limit of 1.6mm.

6. Turn your headlights on

heavy rain reduces your visibility dramatically, make yourself as visible as you can by keeping your headlights on

7. Drive to the conditions

in such adverse conditions, your priority is having total control over your vehicle and reduce risk to other drivers. Therefore, speed limits are inconsequential and not a requisite.

8. Allow extra room

Give your fellow drivers more space. Aquaplaning can cause a vehicle to go sideways unexpectedly so leave enough time to break.

9. If you can’t see the bottom

If you’re unsure of the depth of a puddle or large body of standing water, then avoid it if possible.

10. Take a break

Don’t allow yourself to get stressed out or try and battle through a worsening situation
