Invalid Licences Threaten Fleets

Invalid Licences Threaten Fleets

New data shows a large number of brits are one offence away from a driving ban.

The latest Government data shows 97,187 drivers are one driving offence away from having their license revoked.

These drivers have between nine and eleven points on their licenses. Anyone with 12 or more points on their license faces a driving ban.

This is over 5000 more than compared to last year. IAM Roadsmart identified 92,000 drivers who were “at-risk” of a driving ban in April last year.

This could become a potential issue for businesses dependent on their fleet. The Licence Bureau has warned companies to check their driver’s licenses before it’s too late.

What Effect Will It Have?

Failing to do so could lead to fleets with drivers who shouldn’t be behind the wheel. This presents a serious safety hazard to drivers and other road users. A driver behaving dangerously could cause a collision. This could also lead to an increase in the current shortfall of drivers.

The bureau checked over 830,000 licenses on behalf of clients over the last year. 5,000 checks picked up drivers who should not be on the roads working actively in fleets. This means that fleets run a 1 in 166 chance that they have an employed driver with an invalid licence.

These drivers held invalid licences for several different reasons:

  • driving while disqualified
  • provisional license holders
  • non-GB license holders
  • expired license

Comment

Andy Wheeler from the Licence Bureau said:

“For companies who are not actively managing their risk, these figures could be significantly higher, with potential consequences.”

Fleets that have illegal drivers could face logistical issues when these drivers get taken off the road. But this also leads to concerns about road safety.
