Empty roads aren’t an excuse to speed
The COVID-19 outbreak and the subsequently abandoned roads are giving some drivers the idea that they can live their boy racing dreams.
Police forces around the UK are reporting that they are catching drivers doing ridiculous speeds.
Manchester, Metropolitan and Kent Police have caught motorists clocking up speeds of over 130mph.

Forces have been taking to social media, this is a recent post from the Metropolitan Police:
“In last 24hrs @MPSRTPC #TrafficCops enforced utterly outrageous speeds. Including:
- 134mph in 40 (#A10)
- 100mph in 70 (#A13)
- 76mph in 50 (#A12)
increased risk of serious crash effecting #NHS & #Police resource + hospital space & care. #Covid19 #CoronaVirusUK #London”
North Yorkshire Police, Assistant Chief Constable Mike Walker said:
“These actions can have fatal consequences which tie up emergency services.”
“While many people are following the very clear government advice to stay at home and only make essential journeys, sadly we have seen some motorists using the roads irresponsibly, with highly excessive speeds recorded on key routes and other dangerous offences.
“These actions can have fatal consequences which tie up emergency service and medical resources at a time when they are needed most.
“We have a duty to uphold the law and keep our roads safe for everyone, regardless of the wider situation nationally.”
‘Just because the roads are unusually quiet it’s not an excuse to drive like a maniac and put others at risk.’
North Wales Police recently issued this statement vis Facebook:
“Despite being asked to stay at home, we are still seeing people drive at high speeds on some of our roads – this includes motorcycles too.
Maybe it’s because there’s less traffic on the roads? Maybe it’s because some are still taking advantage of the good weather?
There is no excuse. Enforcement will continue. We are still out there keeping an eye on the roads. Please heed the warning.
The last thing we need is to deal with a road traffic collision. Our NHS colleagues are under extreme pressure. Don’t add to it. #StayHomeSaveLives”.
As well as speeding, officers have also reported seeing more drivers committing offences including mobile phone use, drink or drug-driving and not wearing a seatbelt.
