According to data released by highways England, the cumulative effect of new technology and adding extra lanes has made the M6 safer and faster.
The data shows that:
- The number of crashes is down
- Journey times are down
- Average speeds are up
Commuters around Crewe using the M6 are making an average saving of 40 minutes every week.
Time Savings
If the average nine to five commuter saves four minutes every journey:
- 8 minutes a day
- 40 minutes a week
- 2hrs 40mins per months
- 34hrs 40mins per year
Safety
The initial research also showed the other major benefit of the upgrade. Since becoming fully operational, the M6 is now 30% safer.
The road now has 10 fewer collisions every month than it did in 2015.
There’s also been a 15mph average speed increase for southbound commuters.
Comment
“Tens of thousands of drivers use the M6 every day to travel to and from work and this latest research shows that the extra lanes and new technology we’ve introduced are making a massive difference to people’s journeys.”
“The motorway upgrade means businesses are also benefiting from quicker and more reliable journeys through Cheshire – supporting the regional and national economy.
“We’ll be starting work on several similar major motorway upgrades over the next few years and hope drivers will bear with us in anticipation of the long-term benefits these projects will bring,” said a spokesman for Highways England.
The project to upgrade the stretch of road between Crewe and Knutsford cost £265m. The improvements are set to improve congestion for 120000 drivers who use it daily.
