Milton Keynes Public Charging

Milton Keynes Council has announced its latest steps in its commitment to becoming carbon neutral.

They have pledged to install 250 charging points on residential roads in partnership with Connected Kerb and Ringway. The new charging infrastructure is funded by a £1.1 million grant from the Office for Zero-Emission Vehicles (OZEV). This is the largest grant awarded by the OZEV to date. The chargers installed in older areas, where EV (electric vehicles) ownership is on the rise but there are less off-street parking.

Cabinet Member for Climate Action and Sustainability, Cllr Jenny Wilson-Marklew said:

“We’re delighted to have secured funding to make it easier for local people to use electric vehicles. Encouraging drivers to make the switch to electric vehicles is a vital part of our carbon-neutral future. It needs to be made as easy as possible and we look forward to working with all of our partners to begin this ground-breaking project.”

Who Will This Help?

Around 40% of homes in Milton Keynes do not currently have public charging facilities. This is in line with the national average of 40% of households in the UK live without off-street parking.

18.3% of vehicle sales in August 2021 were EVs, with a total of 12,437 new EV registrations.

Studies have shown that urban areas with less off-street parking tend to have higher pollution levels.

This means the residents in these areas would benefit more from a public EV hub, as they would be improving their health along with reducing their carbon footprint.

Following on from the Government’s announcement to reach a zero-carbon Britian by 2050, they have also legislated that all new homes and office buildings come with a EV charging hub.

Chris Pateman-Jones, CEO of Connected Kerb said:

“Making charging more affordable, sustainable and accessible to all is an essential step if the city and the wider UK is to reach net-zero.”
