New Shell EV Station in Fulham
Shell has opened its first all-electric charging hub in Fulham.
The West London hub has replaced a conventional fuel forecourt. Ultra-rapid electric car chargers have replaced all petrol pumps. 100% renewable energy sources power the chargers.
The 9 new electric vehicles (EV) chargers have a 175kW capacity. This means drivers will have to wait considerably less time to fully charge their vehicle than with a 50kW.
Shell Comment
Shell’s global executive vice president for Mobility, István Kapitány said:
“EV drivers are looking for a charging experience that is as fast, convenient and comfortable as possible. This is exactly what Shell Fulham aims to offer”.
The new hub also features a service area for drivers while they wait. This includes a small supermarket, a coffee shop with a seating area, and free wifi.
The charging hub structure was also built with sustainability in mind. The timber canopy has built-in solar panels to power the station facilities underneath.
This station is Shell’s first hub catered solely to electric charging. The hub is the global pilot with hopes that it will lead to more fully electric hubs around the world.
The need for charging infrastructures like this throughout the country increases as the market for EVs booms. A recent survey from Centrica Business Solutions found more businesses are switching. The study found 40% of businesses had increased the number of EVs on their fleet over the last year.
But a lack of public charging infrastructure means that it cannot meet the UK’s changing demands. This could lead to issues further down the line as more people move to eco-conscious transport solutions.
Government Comment
Transport Minister Trudy Harrison said:
“With more people making the switch to EVs than ever before, this is exactly the type of facility we need to help make the transition as simple as possible for drivers up and down the country”.
Last year Shell announced they will be installing 50,000 on-street chargers publicly and in supermarkets by 2025.
