New Speed Limits in Wales
New speed limits will come into force in some parts of South and North-East Wales.
At the five 50mph zones cameras were recently installed.
Drivers caught speeding after 4th Oct will receive a warning letter and could face fines.
The areas are:
- The A494 between the Wales/England border and St David’s Interchange at Ewloe
- The A483 between junctions 5 and 6 at Wrexham
- The A470 between Upperboat and Pontypridd
- The M4 between junctions 41 and 42 at Port Talbot
The speed limit on the M4 between junctions 24 and 28 in Newport changed to 50mph in March as an initial trial.
The main aim of these new limits is to cut air pollution. The Welsh Government released a new Clear Air Plan for Wales to tackle air pollution following legal proceedings in 2018. Air pollution had already seen a decrease of 47%.
Levels of nitrogen dioxide between 2020 and 2021 at the five locations had dropped to below the legal limit. This is due to reduced traffic because of the pandemic. But with traffic now returning to normal, the Welsh Government have stated they would like “better compliance” in those areas.

Climate change deputy minister, Lee Waters, said the limits were necessary “to achieve the reductions we need to make in the shortest possible time”.
