November EV Sales

Electric vehicle sales continued to rise in November. But experts say the rollout of chargers is “not fast enough”.

Data from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) saw a rise in plug-in electric vehicle sales in November this year. The latest figures for car registrations in November found that 1 in 3 (28%) new cars were plug-in electric vehicles (EVs). This is the highest market share figure since April last year.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) also saw a market share increase. There was a 110% increase in market share compared to November last year.

Car dealers saw 32,522 EVs sold in November 2021. This comprised 21,726 BEVs and 10,796 plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs).
This means there are currently over 705,000 EVs on the road in the UK. But despite the rapid uptake, some experts have criticized the slow rollout of charging infrastructure.

Zipcar Study

Zipcar UK’s 2021 Sustainability Report studied the EV uptake alongside the current and future charging infrastructure throughout the UK.

The study found that London would need to install 3,500 rapid EV chargers by 2025 to keep up with demand.

The report also found a need for 4,000 rapid chargers throughout the capital to support the number of drivers with EVs. But there are currently only 500 throughout the city.

The report emphasized the role that larger organizations had in influencing the uptake of EVs. Zipcar also called on the Mayor of London to help drivers convert to electric. This would help more drivers follow ULEZ regulations rather than be hit with charges.

Comment

General manager at Zipcar UK, James Taylor said:

“The UK Government has set clear targets for stopping the sales of fossil fueled vehicles by 2030, with a focus on switching to electric vehicles. We are at a pivotal moment to make urban mobility more responsible, fair, and sustainable. […] Significant further investment is needed in the infrastructure if we are to achieve our vision.”
