On-street EV Charging Schemes

New research shows a continued disparity in public charging, despite grant schemes.

The On-Street Residential Charge Point Scheme (ORCS) help local authorities fund the expansion of residential charging infrastructure.

These figures show more than 250,000 home charging devices installed throughout the UK so far this year. But only 2,038 installations were through the on-street residential charging scheme. This represents only 0.82% of the overall installations.

The funding intends to improve on-street charging infrastructure and encouraging more people to switch to electric vehicles (EVs).

The DfT say they have awarded funding for 4,539 more chargers that are waiting for installation so far this year. But some have criticized this lack of rollout.

A study conducted by the AA found that in 2020, 1 in 6 councils invested in public charging infrastructure.

The AA has warned that on-street charging is essential for the 40% of UK households that don’t have private driveways. They claim there is a need for significant investment in these areas to encourage more people to switch to EVs.

Jack Cousens, head of roads policy for the AA said:

“There is also a danger that policy-makers think on-street charging is only an urban issue, but there are many rural communities that need on-street charging infrastructure.”

To help the Government recognize areas that need infrastructure improvement, the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) has been asking fleets to supply data.

The locational data provided by these fleets will help them build a detailed national map showing when on-street parking is in the highest demand.
