Scotland’s Charging Infrastructure

Scotland has developed its charging infrastructure making it the best place to charge EVs outside of London.

Statistics

According to the new figures Scotland has now become 2nd in the country for EV chargers per person. The average number of chargers per 100,000 people across the UK is 36. Scotland has beaten this with an average of 47 devices for every 100,000 people. This makes Scotland second only to London which has an average of 83 for every 100,000 people.

30,000 vehicles in Scotland were classed as ultra-low emission vehicles as of March 2021. The majority of these were BEVs (battery electric vehicles) or PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles).

Andy Robinson from Transport Scotland said:

“Despite the disruption caused by the pandemic, it’s encouraging to see we’re leading the way in charger provision outside of London. We need to provide good quality, user-friendly infrastructure across all communities in Scotland, ensuring no one misses out on the benefits the switch to zero-emission brings.”

The Scottish Government has invested more than £45 million in the development of the Charge Place Scotland Network. This project will provide more than 1,900 public charge points across Scotland.

Current Projects

They are also looking into other green initiatives such as Project PACE. So far Project PACE has installed 170 public EV charge points across 44 hub locations in Lanarkshire. The project is set to move forward in Scotland by the end of this year, after being awarded £5.3m of Scottish Government funding.

Transport Scotland has already invested £47m in EVs for the public sector fleet. This sees 3,450 new EVs brought in, with plans for a further investment of £12m this year. Transport Scotland is also working with housing associations to fund zero-emission car clubs. This project aims to provide EV car shares within community groups. This gives more people access to modern zero-emission vehicles. So far this project has cost around £918,000.
