Self-Driving Crash Unit Proposed
The Government has launched a consultation for a new road accident service specifically for self-driving vehicles.
With self-driving technologies becoming more advanced, the Government are looking into creating a road crash investigation team.
This team would form the Road Collision Investigation Branch (RCIB). The branch would be responsible for looking into and gathering data from road traffic collisions involving self-driving vehicles.
The RCIB would operate in the same way as independent bodies that already track air, maritime and rail accidents. The Branch would study specific incidents of note. They then aim to find the causes of collisions and make safety recommendations. The introduction of self-driving technology will improve road safety across the UK.
Government Comment
Roads Minister Baroness Vere said:
“The UK’s roads are among the safest in the world, but we’re always looking at ways to make them even safer. A new investigation branch would play a huge role in this work by identifying the underlying causes of road traffic collisions, so we can take action to prevent them from happening again.”
The Department for Transport (DfT) has launched the consultation to set up the RCIB. With developments in the industry happening rapidly, the DfT are keen to hear concerns and questions about the RCIB. This consultation will run till December 9th 2021.
Industry Opinion
Director of the RAC Foundation Steve Gooding said:
“We should be challenging ourselves on whether we are understanding all we can about the causes of road collisions and what could be done to prevent them.”
