Shell Acquires Ubitricity
Shell Expands Charging Network With New Acquisition
In a bid to expand its electric vehicle charging network, Royal Dutch Shell PLC has acquired Ubitricity, a leading European provider of on-street parking.
On Monday, Shell said that it would buy 100% of the company for an undisclosed amount.
Ubitricity is the owner of the largest public charging network for electric vehicles in the UK. They specialise in integrating electric car charging into street infrastructure such as lamp posts. With a 13% market share in the UK, the acquisition will give Shell customers greater access to on-street charging and also caters for customers who lack private driveways that wish to charge their vehicles.
Istvan Kapitany, who heads Shell’s mobility business, said:
“Working with local authorities, we want to support the growing number of Shell customers who want to switch to an [electric vehicle] by making it as convenient as possible for them. On-street options such as the lamp-post charging offered by Ubitricity will be key for those who live and work in cities or have limited access to off-street parking. Whether at home, at work or on the go, we want to provide our customers with accessible and affordable EV [electric vehicle] charging options so they can charge up no matter where they are”.
What Does This Mean for Cambrian’s Customers?
When the deal is approved, 2700 charge points will be added to the network giving you a greater choice of charging locations. The Shell Electric Vehicle Card currently has a network of 3,000 charge points in the UK with over 950 rapid charge points so addition of the Ubitricity network will nearly double in size.
