TfL Plan to Widen Congestion Charge

TfL Plan to Widen Congestion Charge

Transport for London (TfL) has brought forward plans to widen the scope and level of the Congestion Charge in June 2022.

Congestion Charge Consultation

A condition in the Government’s first emergency funding agreement means that Tfl has had to extend the charging hours and rate.

The hours of the charge were temporarily extended to include evenings and weekends.

The fee increased from £11.50 to £15 in this period.

TfL is now opening consultation and seeking views on the future operation of the Congestion Charge.

The main proposals include no charges in the evenings and sticking to the current charge level of £15.

The new weekend charging hours are targeting drivers to reduce congestion at the busiest times.

Before the pandemic, car and private hire traffic was higher at the weekend and made up 70% of traffic in the charging zone on Saturday and Sunday.

Planned Changes

TfL estimate an increase in sustainable travel with these proposed plans. This could mean 8,000 new public transport trips and 3,000 walking and cycling trips each day on the average weekend.

The plans also include the charge stopping at 6 pm on weekdays. This is in line with the pre-pandemic hours, instead of the current 10 pm end time.

Plans for evening traffic are under review.

The continued reliance on home working negates and investigation into weekday travel.

This is all part of the Government’s Transport Decarbonisation Plan announced earlier this month. It aims to reach a net zero carbon Britain by 2050 supported by a £20m budget.
