Woolwich rapid charging hub opens

Transport for London (TfL) has installed a new Rapid Charging station in Woolwich.

The station can accommodate up to eight vehicles at a time and have them fully charged in 20 to 30 minutes.
This new charging station is part of TfL’s strategy to have a rapid charging hub in every of London’s sub-regions. The facility in Glass Yard is the second site to open, with a hub in east London at Stratford International opened earlier this year and a site at Baynard House in the City of London is currently under construction.

Alex Williams, director of city planning at TfL said:

“It’s essential that we increase the supply of charging infrastructure for EVs as we support the shift to these vehicles to clean up London’s air and decarbonize transport in the city.”

Demand for charging stations

Over 2,000 public charging points were installed in the capital last year. 2020 saw a 66% increase in electric vehicle ownership compared to 2019.

The Mayor of London’s Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Delivery Plan estimates that by 2025 London may need up to:

  • 4,000 rapid charging points
  • up to 48,000 residential chargers

In partnership with the Go Ultra Low Cities scheme, more than 3,000 residential charging points were installed within the city’s 33 boroughs. There are now more than 7,000 charging points within the M25. TfL hit its target of delivering 300 rapid charging points across the capital last year. London currently has around one-third of the country’s charging points.

Nationwide charging points

More nationwide support is needed to help people across the country convert to EV. By 2050, the government wants net-zero emissions in Britain. NatWest has announced plans to install 600 electric vehicles (EV) charging points across its UK locations by 2023. 21 electric vehicle rapid charge points were installed across Wales by SWARCO UK Ltd and Transport for Wales (TfW). Meanwhile, Shell is aiming to install 50,000 charging points across the UK by 2025.
